Nobody Owes Your Ad Their Attention

Advertising begins with an uncomfortable truth: most people were doing something else when your brand interrupted them.

Your audience did not open Instagram hoping to discover a beautifully optimised acquisition campaign. They did not begin their journey into work excited about an outdoor media strategy. They were doing something else. Advertising interrupted. That does not make advertising ineffective. Far from it. It simply means attention cannot be treated as an entitlement. Creative advertising has to earn the interruption.

MEDIA BUYS SPACE

It is relatively easy to put something in front of people.

Meta can do it. Google can do it. TikTok can do it. Outdoor media can do it.

The more difficult question is what happens once the advertisement gets there.

Targeting has made advertising incredibly precise, but precision has also created a strange complacency.

If the right person sees a boring advertisement, it is still a boring advertisement.

Creative remains one of the biggest variables available to a brand.

The image.

The opening line.

The proposition.

The way it moves.

The reason somebody notices it amongst hundreds of commercial messages competing for the same attention.

That is creative advertising.

Not the material produced once the “real strategy” is finished.

There is also little value in endlessly separating brand and performance.

Performance asks somebody to act.

Brand creates conditions that make that action easier.

One builds memory.

The other captures response.

The strongest advertising understands how the two support each other.

CREATIVE EARNS ATTENTION

Advertising relies on repetition.

The danger is becoming repetitive.

A recognisable creative system gives a brand room to change its execution without disappearing.

Typography. Photography. Copy style. Colour. Structure. Attitude.

These become cues.

Eventually, somebody can recognise the advertising before seeing the logo.

That is enormously valuable.

It is also why reinventing the entire visual language for every new campaign can work against the brand.

Consistency does not mean producing the same advertisement forever.

It means understanding which elements should remain.

And then there is the message itself.

Advertising often tries to carry too much.

New product. Great service. Twenty years' experience. Award-winning team. Free consultation. Limited offer. Book now.

The result is not comprehensive.

It is noise.

Strong creative advertising understands hierarchy.

One idea gets remembered more easily than seven.

Simplicity requires confidence because deciding what not to say is often harder than writing another sentence.

But nobody owes an advertisement their attention.

You have a second.

Maybe two.

Use them well.

If you're paying for attention, the creative should deserve it. i313 builds creative advertising and campaigns across digital, paid media, design, web and PR — with an idea at the centre rather than an asset list.
